How to teach in a classroom with students that have different kind of intelligences?

All humans have different multiple intelligences or learning styles. The latter is the method through which people gain information about their environment. As a teacher to be, it is my responsibility to know these styles and to make the difference between how students learn new things.

After I have fully understood the intelligence that each student possesses, I will design my classroom and curriculum in a way that will appeal to everyone. Thus, students will perform better and will remain more important information. I would like to treat some kinds of multiple intelligences (this doesn't mean that the others are not important) and a few activities that probably I am going to use in the future.

Let's start with Verbal Linguistic Intelligence.

As we know from the lesson, the main thing that teachers should realize about these kind of learners is the fact that they love words. They use language to express themselves and to understand other people. Also they learn well through listening, reading and writing. Taking into consideration their skills, some activities that I would use with them in the classroom might be: Encouraging Speech or Description. If they are low level students, they may describe their favourite animal or place using some key words from the text. But if they are students of the upper-intermediate level the perfect exercise might be: Encouraging Speech. I will ask them about a particular issue that I know it arouses interest on them, so everyone will take part in the discussion. They can speak freely, but without offending each other and this activity would be helpful for the other lesson.

Musical Intelligence.

As the word itself implies learners with high musical intelligence enjoy musical activities. For example they like to write and recite poetry, perform dance routines to act or create songs. After we have discussed the lesson, they are going to create a song or poem in order to help remember new things.

The last kind of multiple intelligence that I will discuss is Visual Spatial Intelligence.

In my opinion, the perfect teaching method here is to teach using gestures because these learners think in pictures rather than in words. So I can bring them books that contain only picture stories, then ask them to weave the story by looking at the images. Besides this, one game could be playing chess because this game is very helpful in teaching predictive powers as well as visualization.

To conclude, on the Internet I found a test related to Multiple Intelligence and I thought that it will help you to find out about your unique style of thinking and understanding and identify your strongest kinds of intelligence.

  4. A very good post and very good pictures. I find their careful selection very enjoyable, especially the brain on drums. As a drum beginner I relate to it a lot, and it is sad how people dont generally put much thought on the brains behind the music but only see it as entertaining. It indeed requires real intelligence writing and playing music, not just 'feeling' it. I feel represented, thank you!
