Constructivism Learning Theory

“Knowing reality means constructing systems of transformations that correspond, more or less adequately, to reality”. This is an expression said by Jean Piaget, a famous philosopher and influential educational reformer and I think that it explains constructivism in the perfect way.
According to this model, learners are taught to build new systems of understanding for themselves and their classmates, rather than just having knowledge handed to them fully-formed.

The main goal of using constructivist teaching in classroom is that students learn how to learn by giving them the training to take initiative for their own learning experiences. As a teacher to be I believe that the basic elements of a constructivist classroom might be: the learners are actively involved, the activities are interactive and student-centered and the teacher facilitates a process of learning in which students are encouraged to be responsible and autonomous.

Furthermore, in the constructivist classroom, students work primarily in groups and learning and knowledge are interactive and dynamic. There is a great focus and emphasis on social and communication skills, as well as collaboration and exchange of ideas. This is different from the traditional classroom in which students work alone, learning is achieved through repetition, and the subjects are strictly adhered to and are guided by a textbook.
In the future I would like to use activities that encourage learning in class such as:
1. Students individually perform an experiment and then come together as a class to discuss the results.
2. Students explore a particular topic and then they can present their findings to the class.
3. Watching a movie can provide visual context and thus can bring another sense into the learning experience.
4. Class discussions is used in all of the methods described above because it is one of the most important distinctions of constructivist teaching methods.

So as we can see, constructivism is a learning theory that most certainly has the potential to improve practice in classrooms. Furthermore, I believe that when students are comfortable, whether it be with a teacher or just a setting, they will learn much more quickly. Therefore, I think that it is extremely important to create an environment that is safe and comfortable for the students.

I hope it wasn't boring. If it was, you can watch a video which I easily found on the Internet and I think it's more relaxing.
